This week I was talking to a friend who is a local college student, and he remarked that it’s finals time. That got me thinking about student debt. I know too many friends who, well into adulthood, are still paying off some hefty student loans they accumulated years ago. For some, maybe even you, it’s a major burden.
Student debt is a big issue nationally and here at home. While we have some world-class educational institutions, I suspect many of the students coming out of these schools also have some world class student loan debt.
The most recent figures I have seen show that six out of ten Oregon graduates left school owing more than $26,000, on average. Nationally, the federal direct student loan portfolio now tops $1.2 billion. Higher education is expensive and Oregon students have come to rely on borrowed funds to achieve their education goals. The state colleges and universities get 20 to 70 percent of the revenue from student loan proceeds.
Students loans can be a major headache as you move forward, bringing some hard questions. How do I pay them back? How can I pay them and still have money to pay my other bills? What if the payments haven’t been kept current?
